The gold plated medal is suspended by a red, white, and black ribbon, with a red cloisonné Maltese cross in center. The names of all prisons where
the Confederate soldiers were held appears on both sides. On the reverse is a federal soldier guarding three Confederate soldiers praying over a grave.
The ribbon colors represent:
Red,
for blood
White, for purity
Black, for suffering and death
